This is how the 30 Second Flan challenge came to be.

For about a year, I had been doing mostly animation projects, because I got to fulfill my goal of taking the Animation Mentor course. Totally worth it.

But because I was so much into the animation principles, the precision, the skill, and of course, the fun of it, I became too demanding on the other aspects of my craft, specially illustration. I stopped practicing painting and drawing and only did illustration for finished work.

But I never stopped studying.
In fact, I got into Schoolism as soon as I finished Animation Mentor. Also: totally worth it.

One of the things I realized during this animation-only period, was that my painting when using reference differed too much from the work where I took things from my head, and that the ones that were more taken from my head, are not as good as I want them to be.

So I was inspired by this video Jake Parker published a month ago, and took a 30-day art challenge, in order to, among other things:

1. Find or develop new styles.
2. Get loose on my drawing and painting skills.
3. Practice the software I regularly use (which are Krita on the PC and Procreate on the tablet).
4. Exercise creativity techniques.
5. Stop being so demanding of the quality to the point of paralysis and just get artwork done, whether they are finished or not. In short: make more art.
6. Bonus: practice making music.

I got started on the 13th of august, so there’s no cute pun in this case for this challenge, like March of Robots, Inktober or Dinovember, I’m just calling it 30 Second Flan. Which, we all know, you can’t make a 30-second flan, at most it will be condensed milk with uncaramelized sugar on top. And that was the purpose, to be extremely loose with each project. They’re all about 1 to 2 hour paintings. To see them, go to Instagram and either look for my account or search #30SecondFlan. I didn’t tell anybody, because I didn’t want to promise anybody except myself that I would do this. So now, they’re all hashtagged like that. I did 24 in 30 days. Not bad, considering that a habit starts on the 21st day of doing something repeatedly. So I hope this habit now exists somewhere in my head.

If I go back and look at what I did, I’d say I accomplished 5 of the 6 things I wanted to improve. I do not feel I developed a style. I may have found techniques to make my artwork faster, like masking (that was a huge one) and I finally applied a trick that is going to help my values immensely, but not really a style.

These were my constraints:

-Keeping a simple, minimalist process if you will, but using concepts of real-world lighting and a reduced color palette.

-All must be done in Procreate or Krita.

-Must not take more than 2 hours to make.

-All must show the process in a 30-second video. (I failed with one, because my battery died on me and didn’t record the whole process, the one with Azulio jumping on the lake, but it came out good so I posted it anyway).

-No more than 3 brushes.

-The video must have a soundtrack, also made in Garageband or LMMS.

-Must use some sort of guide: either tutorials or a book. Most of the lessons I can’t share, because they come from Schoolism, but honestly, with $15.00 a month, you totally should take a month and dive into it.

This is where I went loose: Theme.
They were mostly from favorite shows, movies, books, videogames or stories and designs of my own.

Here are some other ideas for challenges that I would definitely try:
a month of landscapes: Janscapes. Would go back and forth from 2D to 3D, from paint, to dynamic topology, to texture maps, to renders. Maybe have some finished pieces here.
a month of rocks, rocky textures, rocky landscapes: Febrock. Would do it 3D, just because I’d like to have a rock asset library of my own, thanks to Blenderguru. And would go perfect using Janscapes landscapes.
a month of mashups: Marchups. Only if you don’t like robots. But, really, who does not like robots? You can also mash-up robots, that would be cool too.
a month of 2D animated line tests: Apriline
a month of everything 80’s: Mayghties
a month of heros, real ones and make-believe: Junespiration. I’d put a constraint like making them all sculpted.
a month of rigs: Riguly (what a meh pun, please propose a better pun, doesn’t have to be for july).
a month of Pixel art: Pixelust
a Month of Spaceships and mecha: Spacetember. Would start everything with Alchemy, just because it’s so good for that.
a month of villains: Eviltober. Which if done with ink, could go perfect with Inktober, and Halloween.
a month of food: Foodvember. Maybe I could mix it with dinosaurs and it can be Dinovember but with a steak.
a month of 3D foliage, trees, forests, leaves: Treecember. I would focus on all possible types of vegetation, from all climates. Would do this 3D, just because I need these assets. See a pattern here?
